Our Commitment to Safety

MITT follows strict federal and provincial safety regulations and has developed a robust Workplace Safety, Health, and Wellness Policy to protect our community. This includes:

• Regular safety training and drills for staff and students
• Clearly defined emergency response plans
• A Violence Prevention Policy ensuring a zero-tolerance approach to threats or violence

Your Role in Campus Safety

Safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re a student, faculty, or visitor, you play an essential role in keeping our campus safe. Stay informed, follow safety protocols, and report any concerns promptly.

Emergency Procedures and Disaster Preparedness

MITT has a Disaster and Emergency Plan in place to respond effectively to:

• Natural disasters (e.g., severe weather, power outages).
• Security threats and evacuations.
• Other emergency incidents.

If an emergency occurs, MITT’s Emergency Response Team and Security Services will coordinate response efforts. Students and staff will be notified through:

• MITT website and social media updates
• Email and text notifications
• On-campus digital signage

Campus Closure Policy

Severe weather or other emergencies may lead to temporary campus closures. MITT uses a risk-based approach to determine when to close its campuses, prioritizing safety while minimizing disruptions. Closure notifications will be posted on MITT’s website, social media, and local media channels.

Violence Prevention and Reporting

MITT has a zero-tolerance policy for violence, threats, and intimidation. If you witness or experience an act of violence:

1. Call 911 if immediate danger is present
2. Report the incident to MITT Security 204-989-6666 or security@mitt.ca
3. Support services, including counselling, are available for affected individuals

Additional Campus Safety Measures

MITT has several policies in place to promote a secure environment:

• Identification Card Policy – All staff, contractors are required to wear a visible MITT ID badge​.
• Visitor Check-In: All visitors are required to report to the main office or front desk on arrival to an MITT campus.
• Smoke-Free and Vape-Free Policy – MITT is a smoke-free campus, ensuring a clean and healthy learning space​.
• Working Alone Policy – Guidelines to protect individuals who are working alone on campus​.

Sexual Violence and Misconduct

MITT is committed to creating a campus community where sexual violence is never tolerated. Students, staff, and volunteers have the right to feel safe and supported on campus, in the classroom, and beyond.

Reporting Sexual Violence

MITT partners with REES (Respect, Educate, Empower Survivors), an online platform for reporting incidents of sexual violence on campus.

With REES, you can:

• Create a secure Record of the incident.
• Choose how to report:
  • Anonymous Report
  • Connect to My Campus
  • Report to Police
• Access info on health care, sexual assault centres, and support services.

As a REES Campus Community, MITT is one of 10 Manitoba post-secondary institutions working together to provide centralized, confidential, and survivor-centred reporting options.

Additional Support

You can safely disclose an incident of sexual violence to any MITT staff member. Staff are trained to listen with compassion, confidentiality and care. They will connect you with student advisors, counsellors, and social workers no matter when the incident occurred.

You can also request access to MITT’s Sexual Misconduct Response Committee.
