Classroom theory and demonstrations are routinely practiced in the production kitchen as Culinary Arts and Design students prepare food for MITT’s three campus cafeterias under the guidance of veteran chef instructors. These hands-on skills are further reinforced during end-of-school-year work practicum. Effective customer service, as well as employability and essential skills acquired through MITT’s Bridging to Work workshops, ensure graduates are well-rounded in all facets of food preparation and production.

Who it is for

Individuals who thrive under pressure, work well as part of a team, are creative and detail-oriented, and have a passion for food and learning new cooking techniques and skills. Keen senses of taste and smell, and stamina are assets.

Work practicum

Eligible students will be placed at a food service establishment determined by availability, student capabilities and\or preference, where they will practice their skills and expand their knowledge during a four-week work practicum.

Where applicable, verification of a valid co-op work permit authorization must be provided to the College prior to the start of work practicum. See the work practicum outline for details on all eligibility criteria and general expectations.

Work practicum is a mandatory component of this program. Students must meet all program eligibility criteria to qualify for practicum. MITT does not guarantee practicum placements when students do not meet eligibility criteria (including having a valid co-op work permit) or when sufficient placements are not available. In such situations, MITT will explore alternative options for program completion with a student.

Apprenticeship

Students who successfully complete the accredited program with an accumulative average of 70 per cent or better in the trade subjects and level for which the program was accredited, gain employment, and register as an apprentice within two years of graduating, will receive credit for Apprenticeship Manitoba Level 1 in-school technical training and 1,350 hours in the Cook Apprenticeship program.

Continuous Program Improvement

As a result, course information and learning outcomes may be adjusted prior to the scheduled course start date.
