This Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)-accredited program prepares students for diverse career opportunities in the health care field. Designed for Manitoba’s evolving health care needs, courses focus on clinical, medical technology, and administrative skills to enhance your medical knowledge, critical thinking, human relations, and organizational abilities. The program’s focus on best care practices will give you the knowledge to enhance patient care and operational effectiveness in health care teams.

Through hands-on learning components in our patient care simulation lab, along with practicums in a variety of health care settings, the program readies graduates for their Health Information-Certified Associates (HICA) designation.

All students participate in MITT’s Bridging to Work workshops, which provide them with a foundation in the employability and essential skills employers demand.

Who it is for

Students with strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and an interest in pursuing a career in health care. These individuals are people-oriented, empathetic and non-judgmental, and thrive in a busy environment. Calm under pressure, they can think on their feet and solve problems on the fly.

Work practicum

Eligible students participate in 19 weeks of work practicum placement in health care settings to gain relevant practical experience, learn on-the-job procedures, and develop valuable contacts.

  • Year 1
    • Four-week health care aide placement in a long-term care setting
    • Four-week health care aide placement in an acute care setting
  • Year 2
    • Seven-week medical office assistant placement
    • Four-week unit clerk placement at the end of the program

Costs incurred for immunizations and other clearance documentation are the responsibility of the student. All required documentation must be provided to the college by the prescribed deadline to safeguard a student’s practicum eligibility.

MITT reserves the right to assign students to out-of-town placements, including remote regional health authority facilities (e.g. The Pas, Thompson, and Churchill). Students will be responsible for all transportation and accommodation costs associated with the assigned placement.

Work practicums may include day, evening, night, and/or weekend shifts.

Work practicum is a mandatory component of the program. Students must meet all program eligibility criteria to qualify for practicum. MITT does not guarantee practicum placements when sufficient placements are not available or when students are not selected by employers. In such situations, MITT will explore alternative options for program completion with a student.

Continuous Program Improvement

MITT continuously reviews and improves programs to maintain relevance in the workplace and effective learning experiences for all students. Although the institution strives to have the website reflect the most current version of all programs, MITT reserves the right to change the program curriculum as necessary to meet industry and accreditation requirements. As a result, course information and learning outcomes may be adjusted prior to the scheduled course start date.
