Some call it intersession, while others call it reading week. Whatever you call it, it’s a time in the school year when students rest, recharge, or finally catch up on that class reading.
Two of our Software Developer students, Ashedzi and Sarah, chose to hit play instead of pause, taking advantage of an opportunity to hone their skills and make connections in the IT industry. Both students spent eight days at Floodline Consulting, a Winnipeg-based IT agency specializing in solutions for startups.
Their task? Find a solution for customizing Auth0’s sign-in screen. For you non-techy folks, they were asked to find a way to transform a generic sign-in screen into a branded experience.
From out-of-the-box…

…to unique.

It was a big challenge. But the problem-solving skills Ashedzi and Sarah had learned in their MITT classes helped them see solutions.
“At first, it was overwhelming trying to wrap my head around what was being asked of us,” said Sarah. “Once I started honing in on my research and keeping notes of the little things, it became a lot easier to manage.”
By the end of their week, the pair had developed an open-source document that others can use to customize their sign-in screens.
Jeff Dugas, CEO of Floodline Consulting, was impressed by more than just the students’ solutions. “They were all you could hope for; great attitude, easy to work with, asked questions and were self-driven,” said Dugas.
“Their work was excellent, and they were thorough in their investigation of the integration options and their demonstration of those options. Their willingness to learn and their quick adoption of the new skills they were learning left a lasting mark too.”
For both students, the experience was memorable, leaving them with a glimpse of the career possibilities that lay ahead.
“There’s a unique sense of fulfillment in seeing something you created actually work. It’s an amazing feeling that’s hard to describe, but truly exhilarating,” noted Ashedzi.
