MITT is proud to announce the launch of two new programs to prepare graduates for high-demand careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors. The new Building Operations Technician advanced certificate and Full-Stack Developer diploma are both designed to respond to growing needs in Manitoba’s economy.
Each of the programs opens opportunities for graduates in a variety of workplaces. Skilled building operators are essential for maintaining and managing modern facilities from offices to arenas, while full-stack developers are in high demand as businesses across every industry accelerate their digital transformation.
“Education is the foundation of a strong economy,” said Colin Kelly, Vice-President, Academic. “We’re constantly in conversation with industry on what skills are needed. When we listen to employers and respond with programs that meet their needs, we create opportunities for students and communities alike.”
The one-year Building Operations Technician advanced certificate will give students the knowledge and skills to operate and coordinate building systems and keep buildings in various environments in optimal condition. Students will learn about foundational electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, and life safety systems, while also gaining skills in flooring and ceiling repair and general building maintenance to provide a more functional workspace.
“Employers across Manitoba are telling us they need more qualified professionals to keep pace with industry changes,” said Frank Gallo, Dean of Skilled Trades and Technologies at MITT. “Building Operations Technician roles are critical for sustainability and safety in today’s infrastructure.”
Similarly, the tech sector needs developers who can work across the entire software stack, from front-end design to back-end architecture. MITT’s two-year Full-Stack Developer diploma directly addresses this by having students build websites, interactive apps, service platforms, and advanced online tools while mastering skills from HTML and CSS, all the way to micro-services, cloud computing, and more.
“Technology is no longer a niche industry; it’s embedded in every sector,” said Jared Miskimmin, Program Manager, ICT and Skilled Trades. “By offering a comprehensive program in full-stack development, we’re helping Manitoba businesses stay competitive and giving students the tools to thrive in a digital-first economy.”
Both programs emphasize practical, hands-on learning. Students in the Building Operations Technician program will train in realistic labs with industry-standard tools, preparing them for careers in property management, institutional facilities, and commercial operations. Full-Stack Developer students will work on live-coding projects and participate in an eight-week work placement at a local business, gaining experience with tools and frameworks used in real workplaces.
“These programs will provide students with the necessary technical skills, while also emphasizing the development of professional skills such as communication, critical thinking, and adaptability,” added Gallo.
