Setbacks can be difficult, especially when they happen over and over again and prevent you from exceling in traditional learning and work environments. But those setbacks don’t have to define you, and they can be overcome with some help.
MITT is giving youth a way to move past those setbacks through the In Motion & Momentum+ (IM&M+) program. Created by the Canadian Career Development Foundation (CCDF), this program aims to strengthen the workforce by assisting individuals transitioning into employment or training. It helps people reconnect with their potential, take charge, and live the life they want to live.
For 10 weeks, six participants spend time learning about their interests, strengths, skills, and values, which leads to creating goals and a self-determined future path.
To be eligible, participants must be 18 to 29 years old, unemployed for the past six months, and not currently in an educational program.
MITT recently celebrated our first five graduates, two of whom are currently working full-time, while another two have returned to school.
Kate Swallow Lee, the program facilitator, praised the IM&M+ program’s ability to transform students’ lives.
“The program is so well developed that you witness a disparate group of people come together to support each other as they learn about themselves and how to overcome the barriers they face while also building a support community.”
As part of the program, participants create and execute a community project. The most recent cohort chose to do a clothing and food drive. The winter clothing donations were sent to Main Street Project, and the food donations were provided to the MITT Food Supports program, which develops food kits for students who face food insecurity.
The participants expressed that they felt valued and important by directly contributing to the community.
MITT will be offering five more cohorts of IM&M+ over the next three years. If you know someone who may be a good fit for this program, please email career@mitt.ca.
