English Language Proficiency
English is the primary language of instruction at MITT. In order to be successful in a program, it is important for all students to have a level of English proficiency that will allow them to participate in all aspects of the program. As such, an applicant whose primary language is not English or who is not from an English exempt country, must demonstrate English Language Proficiency.
Applications submitted without supporting documentation demonstrating English Language Proficiency will be deemed as ineligible for admission unless accompanied by an application to MITT's English Language Institute.
Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by one of the following methods:
- Writing an accepted English language proficiency test, or successfully completing an approved English language training program
- Completing the required level of MITT’s English Language Institute’s (ELI) English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program
- Meeting one of the identified English Language Proficiency waiver criteria
- Completing the required level at an English Language training program with one of MITT’s Pathway Partners
Please review the program categories1 to determine the specific English Language Proficiency requirements that must be met for each MITT program. Not all programs accept all proficiency methods, so it is important to refer to the specific program category to determine what methods of English Language proficiency are accepted.
English Language Test Score Requirements
Official test results may need to be forwarded directly from the test centre to Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology. Tests taken more than 2 years prior to the anticipated start date of the program applied to will not be considered.

The following scores can be verified online as long as the required information is provided:
- CAEL - Applicants must provide a scanned copy of their official CAEL score report or provide their registration number and PIN (found on the official score report).
- Cambridge C1 Advanced - Applicants must provide a scanned copy of their Cambridge C1 Advanced certificate or statement of results showing their reference number or provide their reference number (found on the certificate and the statement of results)
- IELTS - Applicants must provide a scanned copy of their official IELTS score report or provide their Test Report Form (TRF) (found on the official score report).
- IELTS Indicator - Applicants must provide a scanned copy of their official IELTS Indicator score report or provide their Indicator Score ID.
- PTE Academic: Applicants must have their score released to ‘MITT’ by their testing centre. Email admissions@mitt.ca after you have released your score so that we can check our database.
- TOEFL - Applicants must provide a scanned copy of their official TOEFL results or provide their TOEFL appointment number.
Approved English Language Program Requirements
Official results must be forwarded directly from the applicable institution to Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology. The Institute will not accept photocopied documents or student copies. English Language programs completed more than 2 years prior to the MITT program start date will not be considered.

Approved Pathway Partner Program Requirements
Official results or proof of enrolment in the required program/level must be forwarded directly from the applicable institution to Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology. The Institute will not accept photocopied documents or student copies. Pathway programs completed more than 1 year prior to the MITT program start date will not be considered.

English Language Proficiency Waivers
Under certain circumstances students may request a waiver of the English Language proficiency requirement.
To be considered for a waiver, supporting documentation must be provided to show that one of the following conditions has been met:
- Graduation from a Canadian English high school, or a high school in a country where English is the official language (as determined by MITT), with at least 75% (or equivalent) in a senior level English literature course – this includes Canadian-curriculum offshore schools.
- Successful completion of a three-year English secondary school program within Canada
- Two years of full-time post-secondary education within Canada. Two years of a secondary school program within Canada (Grades 11 and 12) plus one year of full-time post-secondary study within Canada may also be considered.
- Secondary education must include Grade 12 where appropriate and completion of 5 course credits per year
- Post-secondary education must be from an accredited program and full-time post-secondary studies are deemed equivalent to the successful completion (no grade below D) of at least three courses per term.
- Two years of full-time post-secondary education within a country where English is the official language (as determined by MITT). Two years of a secondary school program within a country where English is the official language (Grades 11 and 12) plus one year of full-time post-secondary study within this country may also be considered.
- Secondary education must include Grade 12 where appropriate and completion of 5 course credits per year
- Post-secondary education must be from an accredited program and full-time post-secondary studies are deemed equivalent to the successful completion (no grade below D) of at least three courses per term.
- Achieve a grade of 4 or greater on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level (HL) English course, or a grade of 4 or greater on the Advanced Placement (AP) English Examination (Language Composition; Literature and Composition).
- Ten consecutive years of residency in Canada that may include years of study within Canada. The period of residency will be the time lapsed between the ‘Landed On’ date on the 'Record of Landing' document and the start of the program
Note: Studies completed more than 2 years prior to the anticipated start date of the program applied to will not be considered for an English Language Proficiency Waiver. Students who have completed studies that are more than two years old must meet English Language Proficiency by another approved method or take one level of English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
*Waivers are not applicable to the Health Care Aide and Unit Clerk or Pharmacy Technician programs.

MITT reserves the right to request proof of language proficiency by means of a recognized language proficiency score report at any point in the application process.
Program Categories1
Category A Programs2 (all methods of ELP are accepted, Category A requirements must be met where indicated):
Applied Leadership, Automotive Service Technician, Business Administration Assistant, Business Management, CAD Technician, Carpentry, Client Service Specialist, Culinary Arts and Design, Cyber Defense and Cloud Administration Diploma, Electrical Applications, Electronics Technician, Graphic and Print Technician, Hairstyling, Hospitality Management Diploma, Hotel and Hospitality Services, Industrial Mechanic/Millwright, Industrial Welding, International Business, Leadership & Management, Motosport Technician, Network and Systems Administrator, Sales and Event Coordinator, and Software Developer.
Category B Programs3 (all methods of ELP are accepted, Category B requirements must be met where indicated):
Global Supply Chain Management*, Human Resources Learning and Development*, Medical Office Assistant and Rehabilitation Assistant.
*Applicants may also use Category A requirements plus successful completion of MITT’s Post-Graduate Certificate in Business Management including grades of 80% or higher in “Writing and Grammar for Business” and “Dynamic Communication Skills”. Applicants may qualify for a waiver under the regular waiver criteria.
Category C Programs: Category C Programs have individual English Language Proficiency Requirements as outlined below:
- Early Childhood Education applicants must present a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each component if using the IELTS for admission. For all other criteria, Category B requirements must be met. Applicants may qualify for a waiver under the regular waiver criteria.
- Health Care Aide and Personal Support Worker applicants must present an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each component. No other English Language Proficiency tests, waivers, or equivalences will be accepted.
- Pharmacy Technician applicants: To be considered for admission to this program, applicants must meet one of the following English language proficiency requirements (Country Exemptions and English Waivers are not accepted for admission):
- Language proficiency test results that meet the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) Language Proficiency Requirements for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician in Canada;OR
- Graduation from a Canadian high school with three (3) first language English or French courses within a maximum of three (3) consecutive semesters; OR
- Graduation with an undergraduate degree from a university in Canada, where instruction was provided in English or French.
