MITT will host several events as part of its Truth and Reconciliation Week from Tuesday, September 24 through Thursday, September 26, leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Monday, September 30. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day.

Sharing Stories of Resiliency and Reconciliation

Born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End, Kevin Chief leads a team at Chief Partnerships Manitoba Inc. that is working to build relationships that strengthen the community. He has considerable public sector and community experience as a former vice-president of the Business Council of Manitoba and six years as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba representing Point Douglas. Kevin also spent a decade working in education as coordinator of the Innovative Learning Centre at the University of Winnipeg, director of the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre, and community networker with the River East Transcona School Division. Kevin brings a unique voice that can attract diverse crowds into inclusive and healthy conversations about diversity, policy, and social change.

MITT will observe our Orange Shirt Day on September 26 while staff and students are on campus. Wear your orange shirt and share your pictures by tagging @MITTCanada in Instagram posts.

Monday, September 30
All MITT campuses will be closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We encourage students and staff to participate in events in the community.

Below are several community events hosted in and around Winnipeg leading up to and during National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. To view more events, please visit scoinc.mb.ca/orange-shirt-day-events-2024/.

  • The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation invites the public to join their daily lunch and learns from September 23 to 27 for an immersive experience to UN-learn the myths of colonial history in Canada.
  • The Manitoba Museum will host Orange Shirt Days, which provide complimentary admission to the Museum Galleries, Science Gallery, and Planetarium from September 28 to 30. Orange Shirt Days will feature special all-day programming focused on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
  • The Colour Orange: An Indigenous Art Gallery in the Forest will be hosted at Pineridge Hollow in partnership with Anish Corporation on September 29.
  • The Winnipeg Art Gallery will host an event on September 30 featuring Chāpān Teachings—The Ways of Our Grandparents / Great Grandparents.
  • Orange Shirt Day Healing Walk and Pow Wow will be hosted by Wa-Say Healing Centre on September 30 and will feature a pipe ceremony at the Oodena Circle at The Forks and a healing walk to the RBC Convention Centre for a pow wow.
