Truth and Reconciliation Week

This week, MITT will host events for Truth and Reconciliation Week in advance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on September 30. This day honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

Guest speaker: Mary Courchene, Residential School Survivor

Mary Courchene is a Residential School survivor. Born and raised on Sagkeeng First Nation, she has had an extensive career in teaching, school counselling and academic administration. Mary has been actively involved in the urban community, participating in many boards and educational endeavours. She is currently an Elder in Residence for the Seven Oaks School Division, where she serves as an advisor to schools on Aboriginal educational matters. Mary shares her vast experience of over 40 years in public education and working with numerous First Nations communities.

All MITT campuses closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Events and education for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
MITT will be closed on Friday, September 29. We encourage students and staff to take part in other events taking place in the community.

Community events during the week of September 25 to 30

  • Orange Ribbon Gathering on September 27 at 10:15 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 353 St Mary Avenue
  • National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation: During Truth and Reconciliation Week 2023, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation invite the public to join their daily lunch and learns for an immersive experience to UN-learn the myths of colonial history in Canada
  • Manitoba Museum: Will offer free admission to the Museum Galleries, Planetarium, and Science Gallery from September 30 to October 2 with all day programming focused on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action
  • Winnipeg Art Gallery: Welcomes the community to take part in tours, workshops, and talks that center the experiences and history of Indigenous children forced to attend Indian Residential Schools
  • The Canadian Museum for Human Rights: During Truth and Reconciliation Week 2023, the Canadian Museum of Human Rights will be hosting a number of events to mark the third National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in order to recognize the legacy of residential schools and honours the victims and Survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities
  • Orange Shirt Day Survivors Walk and Pow Wow hosted by Wa-Say Healting Centre, The Forks, City of Winnipeg, True North Sports and Entertainment, Unifor the Union, Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg Sea Bears, NCI Spirit of Manitoba
  • Day of Reflection, Sacred fire and gathering on September 30 at 11 a.m. hosted by Anish Corporation, Manito Ahbee Festival Inc., The 60s Scoop Legacy of Manitoba
  • The Colour Orange: An Indigenous Art Gallery in the Forest at Pineridge Hollow on September 30
