Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology will host its Inaugural Pow Wow on Friday, April 14

This special event is an opportunity to celebrate our Indigenous graduates in a traditional way, provide an opportunity for the MITT community to participate in an Indigenous celebration, and an occasion to connect with the greater community and partners.

“We are thrilled to host the first-ever Pow Wow at MITT,” says Neil Cooke, Interim President and CEO and Vice-President of Academic. “MITT recognizes the importance of reconciliation, and we are happy to be able to focus on our Indigenous initiatives moving forward. We are very proud to be able to celebrate our Indigenous students in this traditional way, especially when we can include community.”

The Pow Wow will honour Indigenous graduates who began their programs between July 2022 and December 2023.

The day will start with a pipe ceremony led by Knowledge Keeper Lori Hart at 11 a.m., followed by the Grand Entry at 12 p.m. led by emcee Ray (Coco) Stevenson. Drumming and dancing will take place throughout the day.

MITT graduates and graduating students will be honoured at 2 p.m. The day will finish with a feast at 5 p.m.

“Gathering together is important for Indigenous peoples, and being able to celebrate in a cultural way is an honour for MITT,” says Rhonda Klippenstein, Manager of Indigenous Initiatives and Community Engagement. “Recognizing our students' accomplishments, celebrating their journey, and bringing community together is what this event is about. Hosting our first Pow Wow in honour of our Indigenous students is something we're really excited and proud to be able to bring to MITT.”
