Employment and Entrepreneurship Intersect for ESL Students at Mock Job Fair

Students taking ESL training at our Pembina and Erin campuses come from a variety of backgrounds and with just as varied aspirations. Some are taking their first steps towards landing their very first job in Canada. Others have established roots and are seeking a path towards bigger goals, though improved language skills. Still others have come from far and wide with a different dream: to start a business in the best country in the world.

On December 19, these ambitions came together in the form of student-created businesses holding a mock job fair that took over Pembina campus. Students in higher-level (Stage II) classes worked in groups to envision a number of businesses, create posters and job postings, as well as their own application forms and interview questions. Then students from both Stage I and Stage II perused the businesses and available jobs, looking to find the perfect match and practicing their job search skills. Potential employees had to fill out applications and were then interviewed on the spot. Those doing the hiring evaluated candidates and got a taste of what it’s like to grow your business.
