MITT High School: A head start for a hands-on future

For students ready to break away from the typical high school path, MITT High School offers a dynamic and hands-on learning experience that sets students on the fast track to a career.
That’s what drew Fayth Beaulieu, a Grade 11 student in the Electrical Trades Technology program, to the school.
“I knew I wanted a job that would let me work with my hands, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” said Beaulieu.
As a tuition-free school uniquely situated within the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, MITT High School offers a blend of academic courses and skills-based training in high-demand trades, including Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Electrical Trades Technology, Hairstyling, and Welding Technology. Upon graduation, students complete both their high school diploma and a Level 1 apprenticeship in their trade.
The applied trades learning has both refined Beaulieu’s post-graduation goals and given her an accelerated pathway to get where she wants to go.
“Since coming to MITT High School, I know for sure that I want to go into electrical work and I hope to go on to complete the rest of the apprenticeship levels. MITT is helping me fast track that apprenticeship, and if all goes to plan, I could be a journeyman by the age of 22.”
With small class sizes, individualized support, and a single teacher overseeing all academic courses, MITT High School's environment enables students to form strong connections. Complemented with training in modern simulation labs from industry-experienced instructors, students get a competitive edge whether they choose to enter the workforce immediately or pursue post-secondary education.
“To engage students in school, you have to make the things you’re teaching relevant to them and their future,” said Rory McIntyre, MITT High School teacher. “We find that students really benefit when their education is aligned with opportunities they’ll find in the workforce. The hands-on learning that our students do in their trade gives added purpose to our classroom learning. Students can see why the math, English, and other subjects we’re learning are so important in life, whether they choose to continue a career in the trade they’ve trained in or not.”
