English Language Training for Newcomers

The English Language Centre at 609 Erin Street offers English as a Second Language (ESL) training for newcomers to Canada.

Programs

Daytime ESL classes

  • CLB LEVELS – Literacy to CLB 4
  • Full-time: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Evening ESL classes

  • CLB LEVELS – CLB 2-4
  • Part-time, 4 Evenings/week: Monday to Thursday, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Part-time, 2 Evenings/week: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Mom and Baby class

  • CLB LEVELS – Literacy/Foundation to CLB 3 (multi-level class)
  • Full-time: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Manufacturing Production Worker Program (REDI)

  • CLB LEVELS – CLB 1-4 (multi-level class)
  • Full-time: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Entrance requirements

To apply for these programs, you must:

  • Be a Permanent Resident of Canada (including refugees)
  • Have an English language assessment from WELARC (Winnipeg English Language Assessment & Referral Centre).

To join an English class at MITT’s English Language Centre, please call WELARC at 204-943-5387, complete a language assessment, and ask for a referral to MITT.

These ESL classes are for students wanting to improve their English language skills for living and working in Canada. These classes will help students improve their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

ESL classes use Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) models, as well as an MITT ESL model known as Pathways 2 Education & Employment (P2EE). The P2EE model ensures employment and education are included in all language-learning on a regular basis. This ensures the highest number of clients benefit by increasing employment knowledge while developing in all 4 language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Several events are planned throughout the year as part of P2EE to enhance knowledge and skills related to employment.

Mom and Baby class
  • CLB LEVELS – Literacy/Foundation to CLB 3 (multi-level class)
  • Full-time: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Mom and Baby class is for women with a baby who is 12 months old or younger and has had their English language assessed at Literacy/Foundation to the CLB 4 level. Women will bring their babies with them to class for the day and learn English at the same time. The classroom will have English language learning centres as well as various necessities (cribs, change table, toys, comfortable seating, etc.) to support the end and comfort of both mom and baby.

This class has continuous intake.

Manufacturing Production Worker Program (REDI)
  • CLB LEVELS – CLB 1-4 (multi-level class)
  • Full-time: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Manufacturing Production Worker Program helps refugees in Winnipeg improve their English language skills and provides them with a pathway into employment as production workers with manufacturing companies in Manitoba.

This program is part of the Refugee Employment Development Initiative (REDI) and is a joint programming initiative between Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) and Opportunities for Employment (OFE).

Summer ESL classes (July & August)

  • Full-time: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

These ESL classes are for students wanting to improve their English language skills for living and working in Canada during the summer-time. These classes will help students improve their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Additional components will include the integration of Essential Skills, peer tutoring services, and a mentorship program to assist in the newcomer’s daily life and appropriate work preparation.

In addition to classroom study, your learning will be enhanced through language and computer laboratory work, guest speakers, field trips, informational interviews, community contact assignments, and observations or volunteer experiences.
